The brilliant human rights activist known as Malcolm X once said, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything”. Ponder this for a moment. Some of you may have already heard this controversy going around about a recent incident in the world of Filipino comics, where the creator of the popular comic strip Pugad Baboy Pol Medina Jr. was suspended by his long-time employer Philippine Daily Inquirer. The strip in question is the following. I bet most of you are asking “why is Reimaru Files even concerned about this? Does it have any relevance to their field?” Technically it does. Let me explain why. Let’s start with freedom of speech and how it was removed. What Pol Medina published was a slice of a truth about a certain topic, one that he expressed with a dash of satire and a firm poke at how [...]

One of the biggest geek event in the country, the Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention held their Launch Event and Press Conference at the Newport Mall in Resorts World Manila last May 25, 2013. Many would probably wonder why Toycon suddenly hosted their launch event away from their usual SM Megamall location, it’s just that they had a partnership with Resorts World Manila for their Epic Weekend special. You might thought that it’s the actual event that’s happening at the launch event, thanks to the 40 glass cabinets that are on display that featured several action figures and custom figures. There were also some retail store booths from Big Boys Toys and Great Toys Online that are selling discounted products. There were stage activities for the young kids and special guest appearances, one complain at the press conference is that there were no assistance for the media, all [...]

Before the month of May ended, many people were excited about “Hangover III”, the movie that brought laughter and crazy adventures from a group of friends who dubbed themselves as the “Wolfpack”. First coming out in 2009, the plot revolved around hunk-bachelor Phil (Bradley Cooper), conservative dentist Stu (Ed Helms) and hairy and complicated Alan (Zach Galifianakis) went into a lot of hilarious drunken (and more so, drug-spiked) misadventures around Las Vegas in order to find their about-to-be-wed buddy Doug (Justin Bartha). After the huge success of the movie, the second installment came out on 2011 following the same pattern where the Wolfpack goes on a bachelor’s party for Stu’s upcoming wedding. Another whirlwind of crazy things happen where the highlight went to Thailand, tattoos, drug mule-monkey and Doug missing (again). Jump to the third and latest installment, crazier things awaits the Wolfpack when their past misadventures comes back to [...]

When a studio decides to name its movie “Epic”, you would wonder if it’s just self-indulgence or it’s their goal for their project. By naming your movie with a word that imbibes the notion of greatness, people will instantly have high expectations: Expectations that you better be prepared to meet. Let’s see… Visually, Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age and Rio) did a good enough job capturing the magnificence of the lush forest and all its wonders. It’ll make the young and old alike wish they live in a cottage in the middle of the jungle so they could bear witness to the beauty of nature. As a kiddy film, they made sure it was easy to distinguish bad from good just by looking at the colors: Dark and Gray equals Bad, Lively Colors equals Good. The voice actors were fittingly casted, particularly Colin Farrell (General Ronin) as the brave [...]

Geek themed restaurants are not a common sight in the Philippines, compared to other countries such as the United States and Japan, they have tons of them. Luckily, we discovered one cafe that will make any geeks feel at home. The Sci Fi Cafe was opened just a few weeks ago and is located at the fourth floor of Robinsons Galleria. At a first glance, you wouldn’t notice the cafe as an actual restaurant thanks to the sheer number of action figures displayed at their glass walls, in fact you might even mistook it as a toys/hobbies shop. Inside the cafe will great you with tons and tons of figures, statues and replicas from popular sci-fi, fantasy and superhero movies, comics, cartoons and video games. You name it, they have it, from Star Wars to Lord of The Rings to Ghost Busters up to the Avengers. The vast [...]

Arriving late on Day 2 at the Pinoy Otaku Festival 2013 , I was afraid that I might miss out on most of the activities. Luckily, the last few were very enjoyable and I got to see some very interesting people and exhibitions. Walking around the area, notable stuff around were: The Let’s Go Legit/Lean Mean Machines area, where they had several PS3s for people to enjoy. Also, they had a pretty nice rig set up for people to enjoy the epic Bioshock Infinite. Definitely something I’ll need to experience in full soon. There was also an area for people to register for Dragon Nest for some awesome swag. Their pretty girls were there to help out people and give away freebies. Pinoy PS was also there in full force, and to confess I spent quite [...]

If you have ever been privy to a secret, a secret so great that it could ruin someone’s life but you have no right to tell anyone, then you know how it feels to be Nick – the story teller, the confidant, the friend, and the person within and without. Set in New York City during the Jazz Age, the years between the Great Depression and World War One, I was amazed at how Australian director Baz Luhrmann created a cornucopia of brightly colored dresses, awe-inspiring sets and well-placed musical numbers to embody the romanticism and decadence of The Great Gatsby era. The use of colors was not just to visually titillate the audience but also to symbolically strengthen the emotions being depicted in each scene. Although the stage was already undoubtedly amazing, the film’s cast added their own flair to make one extravagant production. Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jay [...]
