Should we all be excited about it? You decide.
It’s been roughly a month since the alleged photos of the cast of the live action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell ,which stars Scarlett Johansson as the iconic Major Motoko Kusanagi, leaked on the interwebs and, once again, caused both hype and criticism that left fans divided mainly because of the casting choices.
Celebrated as one of the most iconic Japanese media franchise in history, Ghost in the Shell is set in a post-cyberpunk future, where people have access to cybernetic technology, and granted the option to have cyborg body parts and a computerized brain, which leads to a new form of law breaking called cyber crime. Ghost in the Shell revolves around a group of characters that make up the Special Task force named Public Security Section 9 as they combat cyber crime activities and at the same time throw in existential questions regarding the blurred line between cyborgs and natural humanity.
The live action adaptation was already planned back in 2008, but nothing was made solid until October 2014 when it was revealed that DreamWorks had finalized a deal for Scarlett Johansson to star in the lead role. As the movie will feature the villain The Laughing Man as it’s central antagonist, the plot will most likely revolve around the Stand Alone Complex chapter.
In the meantime, let’s all just enjoy these 5 teaser videos revealed by Paramount Pictures that showcase Major Kusanagi in action, and as well as other clips from the movie.
The Ghost in the Shell live action film will be out on March 31, 2017.
