Faces: Voltron Series

Published by Chad on December 3rd, 2010 - in Anime, Faces, TV, Videos

Here’s another episode of Faces, for this episode, we’ll be focusing on the classic 80′s cartoons Voltron: Defender of The Universe.
Voltron is about a group of space explorers riding different vehicles that can transform into a giant robot called Voltron, fighting against evil empires to protect the universe.
For those who didn’t know, the Voltron series was created by Peter Keefe where he licensed two different animes to be edited, lessened the violent scenes and rewritten the script to make a whole new one. The series focused on the two Voltron forces: The Lion Force and The Vehicle Team, originally this was supposed to be a trilogy series, but due to the poor reception in the Vehicle Force arc, the third arc was canceled. A movie was created that featured the two teams fighting side-by-side. So let’s check out each of their opening videos as well from the Japanese versions, take note that the narrator in the opening videos was voiced by none other than Peter Cullen (the guy who voiced as Optimus Prime).
The Voltron Lion Force was the most popular of the two, which composed of five lions to form the mighty robot. This was based on the anime series Beast King GoLion, although this was the first to be aired from the series, this was noted as Voltron III. And then in 1998, a sequel to the Lion Force was created and was dubbed as Voltron: The Third Dimension, the new series was created in CGI (Computer Generated Imagery)

Japanese Version (GoLion)
Voltron: The Third Dimension Version
The Vehicle Team composed of fifteen vehicles and were sorted into three groups: the Sea Team, the Land Team and the Air Team. each group can form into a larger vehicle and also as one giant robot. This arc was the least popular from the series. The Vehicle Team was based on the Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. This was also known as Voltron I.

Japanes Version (Dairugger XV)
The supposed third arc would be called Gladiator Voltron (aka Voltron II) and should be based on the anime Lightspeed Electroid Albegas, but because of low ratings on the Vehicle Team arc, the proposed arc was canceled.
Japanese Version (Albegas)
As of today, the people behind the popular cartoon series are planning to develop a feature length film based on the Lion Force, and last September, they posted the concept art of the said movie. Although up to now, there are still no news on the development.

Faces: X-Men Series

Published by Chad on November 26th, 2010 - in Faces, TV, Videos

For this episode of Faces, we’ll be focusing on the different animated series in one of the popular super hero team: The X-Men

The X-Men, as we all know, are a band of mutants formed by Professor Xavier to use their powers for the benefit of humanity. They first appeared on their very first comic book which was created by Stan Lee and published by Marvel Comics on September of 1963.
The X-Men has spanned different comics book titles, video games, action figures, movies and also animated series, which we are now focusing on this feature. Let’s take a look on some of the different animated series of the X-Men along with their opening videos:
X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men (1989)

This was the very first animated series of the X-Men, although it was aired only the pilot episode. The X-Men arcade game from Konami was based on the said series.
X-Men (1992)
American Opening Theme
Japanese Opening Theme
Also called X-Men: The Animated Series, this the second attempt for an X-Men animation. Most of the episodes are faithful to the comic book arcs, including the Phoenix Saga. The series lasted for six years and spanned 76 episodes, this was the longest running series of the all the X-Men animations.
X-Men Evolution (2000)
In the third incarnation of the X-Men, majority of the members are teenagers (including most of the main members of the team) rather than in their adult form to give a new storyline to the series. X-Men Evolution lasted for three years with 52 episodes.
Wolverine and The X-Men (2008)
Wolverine and The X-Men was the fourth and latest animated series for the X-Men. The story focus more on Wolverine as the lead character. The series lasted for only for a year with 26 episodes.

Faces: Lunar Silver Star songs

Published by Chad on March 13th, 2010 - in Faces, Gaming, Music

For this episode of Faces, we’ll be focusing on the different versions of Lunar Silver Star, but for this case, it’s more on the songs.

The first Lunar Silver Star was released on 1993 on the Sega CD under the name Lunar The Silver Star, then a remake for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn entitled Lunar Silver Star Story Complete was released on 1998, a portable remake for the GameBoy Advance (Lunar Legend) in 2001 and another remake was followed on 2009 this time for the PlayStation Portable with the title Lunar Silver Star Harmony (Harmony of Silver Star in Japan)

There were two songs with vocals in the two remakes and one for the original version. The two songs were Wings (Opening song) and Nocturne of the Wind (the Boat song), the original version has a different song and it was removed from the remake versions.

Ironically, Jenny Stigile, sang both the songs of the two remakes, but the two remakes had different lyrics both the opening and the boat songs. The Japanese version still retains the PSone version songs on the PSP version.

For my personal take, I like the PSone version of Wings and the PSP version for Nocturne of the Wind.

Faces: Mega Man

Published by Chad on February 9th, 2010 - in Faces, Gaming

Today I’ll be introducing a new feature to the blog, and it’s called Faces.
It’s all about the different versions or faces of a certain character from a video game, anime, comics or even from movies. Detailing of the different versions from it’s backstories, abilities and personalities.

And first to be introduced to our new feature will be the famous blue bomber: Mega Man

Mega Man, also known as Rock Man in Japan, was created by Keiji Inafune at Capcom in 1987.
The story began as Rock is a robot created as a lab assistant by the scientist Dr. Thomas Light; following treachery by Dr. Wily, Rock was converted into a fighting robot to defend the world from Wily’s violent robotic threats. Thus he becomes Mega Man.

All the Mega Man series have different stories, settings and characters, so let’s take down some of the popular series.

Mega Man (Rockman)

The very first series of the famous Mega Man franchise, debuted on December 17, 1987 in Japan.

The basic story of the game revolves around the robot engineer Dr. Thomas Light, his robotic “children,” Rock (a lab-assistant) and Roll (a housekeeper), and their struggle against Dr. Albert W. Wily.

Mega Man X (Rockman X)

The Mega Man X (Rockman X in Japan) series is the second Mega Man franchise released by Capcom. It debuted December 17, 1993 in Japan (February 1994 in North America) on the Super NES/Super Famicom. It is the first continuation in plot of the series, preceded by the classic Mega Man series.

The story revolves around Mega Man X, the final creation of Dr. Thomas Light, who is discovered by world-renowned archaeologist Dr. Cain and used to create an advanced race of robots known as “Reploids” (called so because they are literally reproductions based on the design of X). However, not long after their creation, some of the Reploids begin to go “maverick” and attack humans. Because of this, Dr. Cain is asked by the council to put a stop to this, and as such, forms a special unit to stop these “Mavericks” known as the “Maverick Hunters.” However, the leader of the Hunters and Dr. Cain’s initial creation, Sigma, goes maverick himself, taking many of the Hunters with him. Thus, the beginning of the First Maverick War begins to take shape.

Mega Man Legends (Rockman DASH)

Mega Man Legends,(Rockman DASH series, Rokkuman DASH shiriizu), is the third series in the Mega Man franchise. DASH is an acronym for “Digouter’s Adventure Story in Halcyon Days”. The series features 3D platforming gameplay.

The Legends series takes place thousands of years after the ZX series. By this time, the world is mostly ocean, leaving some islands left for civilization to prosper on. Based on in-game dialogue, the series takes place at least in the year 70XX, if not later.

The player controls MegaMan Volnutt, a teenage digger and archaeologist of sorts who searches underground ruins mainly for Quantum Refractors, which are the civilization’s primary source of energy. He was found as a baby on Nino Island at the bottom of the closed-off Nino Ruins and was raised by Professor Barrel Caskett along with his granddaughter Roll Caskett.

Mega Man Battle Network (Rockman.EXE)

Mega Man Battle Network is a spin-off series based on the original Mega Man. This spin-off combines elements of the classic Mega Man stories with the high-tech world of computers.

In a parallel universe from the Mega Man classic series in the year 200X, the internet has become integrated with every piece of electronic equipment in existence (from TVs to ovens), and people carry around hand-held devices known as a Personal Exploration Terminal (PET). These devices act as phones, pagers, instant messengers, news beams, and hacking devices all rolled into one. Additionally they are able to be customized with a “NetNavi” or a human-like personality that can be anything the owner desires.

A fifth-grader named Lan Hikari(Netto Hikari in Japan) has a NetNavi named MegaMan.EXE (Rockman.EXE), a virus-fighting blue-suited cyber personality who is also Lan’s best friend. Although MegaMan.EXE has no body (unless the PET device itself counts), he can wander around in Cyberspace and explore computer systems as if they were alternate worlds. Together Lan and MegaMan.EXE (also known as just MegaMan) cooperate to fight off hackers and viruses.

Mega Man Zero (Rockman Zero)

The Mega Man Zero, known as Rockman Zero is the third series in the main Mega Man story-line, and the fifth series in Capcom’s Mega Man video game franchise.

The story takes place one-hundred years after Zero had sealed himself after the Elf Wars. In this time-period, both the “Maverick Wars” and “Elf Wars” have ended, but a new threat has arisen and threatens to destroy both human and Reploid kind. A young scientist named Ciel, leader of a “Resistance”, is searching for the legendary Reploid Zero to help in the fight against the oppressive forces of Neo Arcadia. She comes across the ruins of the lab in which Zero was sealed and awakens him. Thus, Zero becomes a member of the Resistance and takes up his sword once again to fight against evil.

Mega Man ZX (Rockman ZX)

Mega Man ZX is the first installment in the Mega Man ZX series.

In the 26th century, about 200 years after the Mega Man Zero series, the difference between humans and Reploids has become nonexistent, and a new combination of “man and machine,” called “humanoids” has emerged. Although the series of events known as the “Second Maverick Wars” has long since ended, a new series of “maverick” uprisings begins to occur, which proves to be a dangerous threat since all beings on earth are now part machine in nature and thus susceptible to the outbreak. Vent and Aile, orphans from a maverick outbreak that occurred ten years ago, get drawn into the new conflict, along with Giro, the head of their delivery team.

Mega Man Star Force (Shooting Star Rockman)

MegaMan Star Force, known as Shooting Star Rockman is a series takes place 200 years after the MegaMan Battle Network series.

Geo Stelar’s father disappeared in space, and a friend of his father, Aaron Boreal, gave him a Visualizer that belonged to his father, a device that allows see electro-magnetic waves. With this, Geo was able to see Omega-Xis, a EM alien that escaped from Planet FM with the Andromeda Key. As Omega-Xis is weak on Earth, he needs to EM Wave Change with a human to use his full strength, and he says that if Geo helps him, he will help find his father. They fuse into MegaMan, allowing Geo to enter in the “Wave World”.

So there you have it, tune in in the future for more on Faces: guide to the different versions of your favorite gaming, anime and movie characters.
